Columbia Wetlands - Call for Entry

A mixed media, group exhibit presented at the Art Gallery of Golden in collaboration with Wildsight

The Art Gallery of Golden (AGOG) is now accepting exhibition proposals and artists’ submissions for a

mixed media group exhibit thematically titled “Columbia Wetlands”.

First opened in February 2007, the AGOG is a public art gallery established by Kicking Horse Culture,

aka Golden District Arts Council. Moving down the street in June 2008, to an enlarged and newly

renovated space on the main street of downtown Golden, AGOG and the new Studio Gift Shop are

a primary outlet for the visual arts in Golden.

CALL FOR ARTISTS’ SUBMISSIONS

The Art Gallery of Golden and Wildsight are collaborating and combining resources to create a

mixed media exhibit that artistically and thematically explores the Columbia River Wetlands. The

exhibit will open on January 30, 2009 as part of the commemoration of World Wetland Day on Feb. 2.

As importantly, a full colour print catalogue of the exhibit featuring images and descriptive text will

be produced. In addition, the catalogue will be re-worked to become an internet exhibit available

to virtual visitors from around the world.

Work chosen for the exhibit will be available for sale at the AGOG’s usual commission of 60% to the

artist. The exhibit will remain intact for the duration. Unsold work will be returned to the artist at the

end of the exhibit. All work in the exhibit will be featured in the printed and online catalogue.

Because gallery space is limited, some work - with the artist’s permission - may only be included in the

catalogue and online exhibit.

The work chosen will derive inspiration from the world-renowned Ramsar site, the Columbia Wetlands,

one of the largest contiguous wetlands in North America. Here, between the Rocky and Purcell

Mountain ranges, lies one of the most significant ecological treasures in the world. We hope that the

ultimate result of the various facets of the project will inspire and inform the exhibits’ audience and

perhaps move viewers to a greater understanding, appreciation and stewardship of this natural

world. Please see more descriptive information on the Columbia Wetlands in Appendix 1.

We invite submissions from artists who are practicing in a variety of studio arts including 3D and 2D.

We also invite submissions from authors who could contribute poetry, short works of fiction and/or

essays inspired by and related to the theme.

The Art Gallery of Golden will establish a curatorial process to determine and mount the exhibit.

Works will be shortlisted and curatorial visits may follow. Curatorial decisions will be announced by

mid-November, 2008.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

FlowFest: For Love of Water

A historic event in Nelson, BC to celebrate Water

When & Where:  Friday night (September 12th) @ The Capitol Theatre  (doors@7pm for art opening & auction, show@8pm) and Saturday night (September 13th) @ Finley's (show starts at 9pm)

Tickets: On sale at Enchanted (356 Baker Street) -or- The Capitol Theatre ($20/one night or $30/both).  Tickets also on sale at Common Grounds in Castlegar, Sunnyside Naturals in Kaslo & Gaia Tree in Winlaw.

Flow Fest was born from a vision that Water is Life and that we, on the Earth at this propitious time, have a responsibilty to ensure that all sentient beings have the right to clean, wild water for seven generations to follow us. So we gathered the artists and visionaries from all across our beautiful Kootenays and beyond, and asked them to express truthfully from the richness of their souls, what Water means to them.

Now, after six months of diligent preparation by some of the most creative mindhearts and wisdom-keepers of our community, the 2008 Flow Fest has arrived!  This Friday night, Nelson is in for a breathtaking evening of original dance, performance, spoken word, theater, knowledge, comedy and music!

For those of you who have been looking forward to Grandmother Emma Shorty's visit, we regret to announce that due to recent health issues, she's been advised not to travel here from the Yukon. But as the great Flow would have it, the cherished and powerful Water Activist, Eloise Charet* will graciously be speaking to us on the Sacredness of Water.

To read some of  Eloise's amazing story or to grok the full performance lineup click here.

*Since Eloise will only be offering a taste of the wisdom she brings to Friday night, she will be holding a knowledge circle for those wishing to go deeper into her teachings and stories.  We will be meeting at 10th Street Campus parking lot on Sat 13th @ 8:45 for ceremony & carpool.  To reserve your place in the teepee, email flowfestival@gmail.com.

Then...on Saturday night......There will be boogie, there will be beats, there will be soul-sweet treats all the night long.  You don't wanna miss this down-in-the-roots of love for Mama Earth night of original music and dancing for Water.  Hosted by the snappy and divine Ms Michelle Mungall, interspersed with cameos and other treats it is Round 2 at Finley's! Tickets for this event also on sale at Finley's.

Please visit www.flowfest.ca for more information and then...pass it on!!!

Also, drop us a line if you're willing to volunteer - we need a few extra hands!

Kootenay Gallery Community Demonstration Xeriscape Garden

As you know the Kootenay Gallery is developing a Community Demonstration Xeriscape Garden on the grounds surrounding the gallery building. In order to inhibit weed growth and add organic matter to the soil we will be laying cardboard down between the plantings as sheet mulch and then a layer of leaves and grass clippings.  If anyone has either large sheets of carboard and/or leaves and grass clippings to donate to the garden please contact the gallery.  These can be dropped off at the gallery anytime or contact us for pick-up.  We encourage everyone to come and see the progress made over the summer!

WHAT: The Art of Native Plant Landscaping: From Edibles & Medicinals to Local Xeric Species

Keefer (MSc, PAg) is an ethnoecologist who specializes in ecological restoration, revegetation and ethnobotany. He has worked extensively with the Ktunaxa Kinbasket First Nation and helped establish Aqam Native Plant Nursery (renamed Tipi Mountain).  His business Keefer Ecological Services provides services valuable to land development including plant inventory, rare habitat avoidance, and reclamation.

Tanya Pixie Johnson: Lines in Blood and Milk

September 6th to November 9th.

graphic

The Startled Sky, Tanya Pixie Johnson, 2008.  Acrylic on Board.

Lines in Blood and Milk is an exhibition of new work by Slocan Valley based artist Tanya Pixie Johnson. Tanya’s paintings are a tracing of bloodlines, a personal unravelling of ancestry and "raison d’être”.  They are a deep exploration of experiences, visions and teachings received while participating in traditional and medicine ceremonies of certain indigenous people of the Americas and South Africa.  A series of drawings will also be displayed that the artist calls "riverspines".  They explore reflection, the above and below relationship and the skin between the worlds.  These ideas are juxtaposed with notions of information traveling through the spine and along nerve passageways.  This work brings together years of searching.  From a look to Eastern ways, a yoga practice, a rich dreamtime, study of the mystics to an immersion in ceremonial practices held by entheogenic practitioners.  Having grown up in Kenya and South Africa, Tanya Pixie's exposure to Sangoma ways and her relationship with the landscape and people, has shaped her perception of ancestry and caretaking of ancestral spirits.

Kootenay Gallery Monday Night at the Movies

will be starting  this September with another great line up of eight films from the Toronto International Film festival.  Once again, gallery members  are offered a real price reduction for buying series tickets for the whole season and non-members get a deal too on series tickets rather than singles.  As Monday Night at the Movies is a gallery fundraiser, we hope to reach an even larger audience  than in previous years, so it's a good idea to get your series tickets early - and think about them as a good gift idea too, when you have a special friend or relative with a celebration in the offing. Our loyal fans know what terrific movies we present and know to make sure of their tickets by buying early.

Prices for Gallery members  -$48 for eight movies; non-members $64; singles $9 each. These can be purchased at the Kootenay Gallery, the Castlegar Library and at the door on the evening of the performance.

The first movie to be shown on September 29th, at 7pm at Kootenay Centre Cinemas is "Up the Yangtze," a visually stunning documentary about the people living alongside China's Yangtze River and the impact of the Three Gorges Dam Project on them. This , incidentally, ties in neatly with the current exhibits at the Gallery  - No Water No Life and Remembering  Renata -  and with our current  interest in China and its politics.

Other movies in the line up include The Stone Angel, Young at Heart and The Duchess.

Applications Being Accepted for 2009 Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft

Wholesale tradeshow for craft artists takes place in February & August

Baltimore, Md. ( July 28, 2008) -- Applications for the 2009 Buyers Market of American Craft are now available. Show dates for 2009 are February 13-16 (Jewelry Preview on February 12) and August 1-3 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

The biannual Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft is the largest wholesale-only tradeshow of work made by hand in the United States and Canada. It attracts thousands of retail gift shops, museum stores and galleries that sell fine handcrafted jewelry, glass art, furniture, ceramics, art made from recycled goods and more.

"In light of a number of factors surrounding the February 2009 show, we are encouraging prospective exhibitors to submit applications as close to the first review date as possible,” says Show Director Christine Kloostra. “We anticipate filling more quickly than usual as a result of the date change of the Baltimore show, a reduction of space in the exhibit hall due to construction, and the introduction of the new two-year February contract.”

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year, with a first review on September 1, 2008. To request an application via mail, call 410-889-2933. Applications can also be downloaded from www.americancraft.com and will be accepted via www.zapplication.org beginning August 15, 2008.

CCA BULLETIN - CCA’s 2008 Federal Election Action Plan

Just the Facts

The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper visited the Governor General yesterday and asked her to dissolve Parliament which will trigger a general federal election to be held October 14, 2008.

During this campaign, the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) will be providing information to its members and the cultural sector on the positions of the federal parties regarding arts and culture in Canada. The CCA will operate under the Federal Election Rules of Engagement (see below) approved by the CCA Board of Governors. These rules reinforce the non-partisan character of the information and other services that the CCA will provide during the campaign.

The CCA is sending today a list of questions on cultural policy to the 5 major political parties. Answers to those questions will be published on our Website without any editing as soon as they are received. The CCA will also post political parties’ political platforms and will publish without edits or comments all appropriate excerpts presenting the position of the parties on the issues affecting the arts and culture sector. Other developments that may occur on the campaign trail will be monitored and reported.

More specifically, the CCA will be providing the following services during the electoral campaign;

  • An overview of the status of various legislative and policy initiatives upon the dissolution of Parliament. The overview will highlight the major events and accomplishments of the 39th Parliament. This overview will be sent to all CCA members and all bulletin subscribers and be posted on CCA’s special 2008 Federal Election webpage.
  • Doorstep kits with short backgrounders on key issues affecting the interests of artists, creators and arts and culture professionals, including :

-          proposed revisions to the Copyright Act ( Bill C-61);

-          proposed changes to film and video certification process ( Bill C-!0);

-          policies needed to support the creative economy;

-          federal funding of the arts and culture sector;

-          promoting Canadian culture on the international stage;

-          the role of civil society in the public policy process,

-          taxation rules for small and rural charities;

-          broadcasting and telecommunications policies in the second millennium;

-          a list of questions for local candidates touching on key issues facing the arts and culture sector;

-          balanced commentary on issues that emerge during the election campaign of importance to the arts and culture sector;

-          links to the websites of other arts and culture organizations that will provide balanced, non-partisan information pertinent to the election campaign;

-          a review of the most important press articles related to cultural issues in the electoral campaign.

Finally, in the post-election period, the CCA will provide information on the new Cabinet, the Speech from the Throne and other analyses regarding the prospective federal policy agenda concerning arts and culture.

Tell Me More

Federal Election ‘Rules of Engagement’

(Approved by CCA Board of Governors: October 20, 2006)

  • The CCA is a non-partisan organization and this reality must be constantly reinforced through all CCA information, communications, and other materials that may be developed during the period of a federal election.
  • The CCA will provide as a service to its members information to the arts and culture sector about the issues of concern and about the platforms of the federal parties.
  • The CCA will not endorse any candidate or political party based on their electoral platform; the decision to cast a ballot is the right and duty of every Canadian citizen, who will form their judgment on an individual basis.
  • The CCA will attempt to explore in depth the positions of each federal party as they affect the interest of the Canadian arts and culture sector, arts supporters, and audiences. In order to do so, the CCA will send identical questions to federal parties and will seek answers that go beyond platitudes.
  • The CCA will offer any political party an opportunity to rebut analyses and such rebuttals will be made available to our members and to the sector through bulletins and postings on the CCA web-site.
  • The CCA will circulate information from each federal party without amendments or editing.
  • In all other respects, the CCA will respect a balance of information to its membership, making available appropriate information from all federal political parties as it is made available.

What Can I Do?

You can help the CCA provide a more complete service to its members and stakeholders in the following manner:

·         If you would like the CCA to include a link to the election materials or activities that your organization is preparing for the election please send the link to Helen.bobat@ccarts.ca

·         If you hear of anything of particular interest to the arts and culture sector coming from all candidates’ debates or from speeches by candidates from all political parties, please send that information to Helen as well.

·         And needless to say, voting is both a privilege and a responsibility of living in a democratic society. Please do what you can to persuade everyone you know to ensure that they vote in this important election.

HR Council for the Voluntary and Non Profit Sector

HR Council releases findings from Canada-wide surveys of non-profit employers and employees

The HR Council for the Voluntary & Non-profit Sector (HR Council) is currently conducting a comprehensive Labour Force Study that will shape strategies to attract, develop and retain appropriately qualified people to work in the voluntary and non-profit sector. Recently the HR Council released the Study's second report, presenting findings from its Canada-wide surveys of non-profit employers and employees.

Conducted on behalf of the HR Council by Ipsos Reid, the parallel surveys provide an overall national picture of paid employment in the sector. The Survey of Employers provides empirical evidence about the characteristics of organizations, their recruitment and retention practices and challenges, as well as their skills needs. The Survey of Employees provides new statistical information about the demographic characteristics of the people who work in the sector, what they find satisfying and dissatisfying about their jobs, and their plans and expectations for the future.
